My parents, Louis & Josephine Greco start selling produce door to door after my father
returned home from World War II. They would load up their truck in Williamsport, sell
product on the way home to Galeton, and then go back out the rest of the week.
In 1951 they bought Galeton’s first self-serve grocery store. Before that, customers
would go in a store, tell the clerk what they wanted, and the clerk would get it for them.
The deal was that my mother would run the store and Dad would stay on the truck.
That only lasted a few months until Mom had the store so busy she could not handle it
The original store went through three additions over the years. My two sisters and I literally
grew up in the store.
After college, I convinced Mom and Dad to sign for a loan so I could open my own store.
My first store was in Wellsboro, then Mansfield, Renovo, and Jersey Shore. The original
stores were sold to Bi-Lo in 1995 and I operated other stores since then.
I noticed that toward the beginning of the 21st century that customers were moving toward
fresh, made in the store foods and our deli and meat departments were doing better
than the groceries. That was the beginning of my idea for Papa the Butcher.
